Reflections on Puffs: Or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic
As we’re coming up on two years since we brought Puffs to the stage, I find myself reflecting on what this show meant to all of us involved in the production—and what it continues to mean, even after the final curtain fell. It’s been a journey that resonated deeper than we could have imagined, and as time passes, the message of the show only grows stronger. As I look back, I realize: I’m a Puff, and I’m staying—and I know many of you are, too.
What many people don’t realize is, to quote David Hockney out of context, “…this play is serious.” When we first chose Puffs, it wasn’t just about choosing a show that would be funny and entertain—it was about giving voice to those who sometimes feel like they don’t fit in. It was about creating a space for the misfits, the underdogs, and the quiet heroes who don’t always get the spotlight. Puffs is the story of those who might not be the smartest, the bravest, or the most popular, but who have loyalty, heart, and a determination that makes them extraordinary in their own way. And that’s exactly why we chose it—because Puffs celebrates the misfits, and we believe in the power of stories that remind everyone that they belong.
At West Valley Arts, we’ve always believed in creating a space where everyone feels seen and valued. Puffs speaks directly to that spirit—it tells us that no matter how much the world may focus on the “chosen ones,” there is still magic in being who you are. There’s power in embracing your uniqueness, in showing up, and in supporting each other. We’re all important, even if we’re not always in the spotlight.
There’s a line from the absolute heart of the show that has stuck with me since the very first time I heard it:
"We're all important, Wayne. And we're all unimportant. We're all heroes. In some way. To someone. And as for your story? I think it was ...pretty cool."
This line embodies everything Puffs represents. It’s about the fact that we’re all important in our own way, even if we’re not always celebrated in the traditional sense. It’s about knowing that, in some way, we’re all heroes. We all make a difference to someone, somewhere—even if it’s just by being our authentic selves. And that’s why Puffs continues to matter.
As we look back on the incredible journey of Puffs over the past two years, I’m filled with pride and gratitude. This production wasn’t just about the laughs or the fun; it was a powerful reminder that we all have a place in this world. We may not all be destined for greatness in the conventional sense, but that doesn’t mean our contributions are any less significant.
So, to all the misfits out there who ever felt like they didn’t belong, this theatre is for you. Just like the Puffs, you don’t have to be the biggest, the boldest, or the most famous to make a difference. You matter. Your story is important. And even when you feel overlooked, you’re a hero to someone. Whether you’re on stage or in the audience, your presence is felt, and your voice is heard.
Looking back, I’m reminded of just how much Puffs has meant to all of us—and I’m excited for what’s to come. Because the magic of Puffs isn’t just confined to the stage—it’s in all of us. And it’s a reminder that, no matter who we are or where we come from, we all have something valuable to offer.
I’m proud to say that I’m a Puff, and I’m staying. And I’m so glad that all the people involved in that show taught me one valuable lesson: “Puffs are the best, coolest, most important house!” and we belong, exactly as we are.
