Masks have been an integral part of theatre all the way back to the start. In this class we’ll talk about the elements of mask design that will help to create a compelling character, and the tools and material options for realizing that design including face casting, traditional paper mache techniques, leather working, and thermoplastics.

Meet the Instructor

Kelsey Nichols is a costume designer and costume shop manager for West Valley Arts. She was trained in mask making in Indiana University’s MFA Costume Design program and has had ample opportunities for strange stage mask designs for productions of Xanadu (the cyclops), Into The Woods (the witch), Mr. Burns: A Post Electric Play (the Simpson’s family and beyond), and Phantom, among other independent projects.
